Nose Reshaping
Nose reshaping is a layman’s term for rhinoplasty or plastic surgery on the nose. There are many reasons people undergo the procedure and these reasons lead them to undergo two distinct kinds of surgery dependent upon the desired outcome. The two techniques are called closed and open procedures.
What is the Closed Procedure?
In the closed procedure the cosmetic surgeon will perform the plastic surgery from within the nose. During the procedure bone and cartilage will be removed and rearranged in accordance with the needs of the procedure. The skin on top is untouched and there are few if any visible signs that a surgery has occurred once all swelling has alleviated.
What is the Open Procedure?
The open procedure is a drastic version that calls for the columnella, the small section of skin separating the nostrils to be cut so that the skin can be gently lifted. This extra room will allow the cosmetic surgeons to add to or remove bone and cartilage at need. If cartilage needs to be added as part of an augmentation surgery this can either be taken from another spot on the patient’s body such as the pack of the elbow, a rib, or the head. There are also implants available in some situations that will be used in place of the cartilage.
The open procedure is used for drastic augmentation and reconstructions as well as fixing a deviated septum and other similar issues that may cause difficult breathing in some people. At any rate there may be a need for the surgeon to decrease the size of the nostrils so that the nose remains in proportion to itself after the surgery.
